Many so called SEO experts firmly believe that there is no longer any importance in that little bar known as the Google Page Rank. This is mainly due to the controversial but necessary purge on paid links. Many a high quality and for what a lot of people are important websites have now been given a penalty in respect of their websites page ranks. As an example the website at seroundtable is only classed as a page rank four when in reality it should be at least a page rank six. This leads to a whole new debate; should the Google page rank toolbar be replaced by another tool such as the Google page strength toolbar?
So what would this page strength rank represent? Well to answer this question we need to start by looking at what is wrong the current page rank toolbar. Well many people think that the first is the true page rank and this is the one that we do not see. The second and the one that we do see is the one that is placed on the toolbar. So why have the 2 ratings? Well I suppose Google are attempting or hoping that people will not continue to purchase text links on a site if the page rank they see on the toolbar is lowered. Alternatively they may well be hoping that a site like seroundtable then decides to no-follow the links to regain its true page rank. Is this working? Well by taking a look at seroundtable it would suggest not, the site still has a large number of advertisers who seem to be gaining "link juice" from the site.
My idea for page strength would be to have one true value shown on the toolbar but it would be displayed in one of two colours. Again with seroundtable it would show a PR6 in a red colour. This red colour shows danger, it shows the public that the site does pass on "link juice" which would indicate that it has been penalised. A site which does pass "link juice" could be shown with a green colour but if it were to start selling backward links would then be at risk from turning red.
For this to work Google would have to stop passing the link juice from a site where it expects or knows is selling links. Will it ever happen? I guess only time will tell.
