All of us with a web business know how much of a role copywriting plays with our success or lack of it. The thing about copywriting principles and concepts is they are fairly straightforward and not hard to understand; it is the writing that proves to be challenging. Copywriting is one area in which there are no shortcuts to becoming good or great, and that is because it involves writing.
You will have to put your time and dues in to the learning and improvement process before you begin to get anywhere. If you ever think you are ready for prime time, then find a way to promote a sales letter - you may find it a very humbling experience. Success does happen in the world of copywriting, but for the majority it's a tough road ahead if they don't work towards building their copywriting skill bit by bit. One of the best ways to learn and get better is to be graded, somehow, or get feedback on your copy from somebody who knows what they are talking about. Yes, like we always say - you need a firm basis of knowledge in order to advance. We tend to feel even the very best writers will tell you that there is always something new to learn.
If you can, try to gain a sense of your own writing in terms of value to other people. Positive reinforcement is so powerful and effective, and unfortunately that does not always happen. Obviously you have to become independent on all fronts, so do what you can to get needed feedback and reinforcement, if possible. Being your own worst critic is fine, but nothing replaces having an experienced copywriter read and grade your work.
Participating in copywriting forums on the Internet is one thing you can't ignore; there's literally so much you can learn from the other advanced copywriters who happen to share their knowledge at no cost on these discussion boards.
Be careful about spending too much time online because you need to be writing and not reading once you have learned from a good course. The net does have value from an educational perspective, but it is only a resource or tool and not a place to endlessly hang out.
If you want to write good copy, then you need to learn copywriting principles and basically as much as you can and then practice. One thing though, you will not always use everything you know in any one piece of copy. There is a very real reason why the best copywriters have decades of experience or at least very many years.
